They are located on the left and right in the retroperitoneal space, and in adult humans are about 12 centimetres (4 1⁄2 inches) in length. They receive blood from the paired renal arteries; blood exits into the paired renal veins. Each kidney is attached to a ureter, a tube that carries excreted urine to the bladder.
The kidneys are two bean-shaped organs located on either side of your spine, just below the rib cage. Despite their small size, they perform incredibly important functions to keep the body balanced and healthy. Every day, your kidneys filter about 50 gallons of blood to remove waste, excess fluids, and toxins through urine. They also help regulate blood pressure, maintain the balance of minerals and electrolytes, and support red blood cell production.
When the kidneys are not functioning properly, waste builds up in the body, leading to serious health problems. Common symptoms of kidney issues include fatigue, swelling in the legs and ankles, changes in urination, and persistent back or side pain. Many kidney problems, like chronic kidney disease or kidney stones, develop gradually and may go unnoticed until they are more advanced.
